Arvind Kejriwal was born on August 16, 1968, in Siwani, a small town in the Bhiwani district of Haryana, India. He was raised in a middle-class family with strong values and a focus on education. His father, Gobind Ram Kejriwal, was an electrical engineer, which influenced Kejriwal’s academic interests and disciplined upbringing.

Education

Kejriwal completed his schooling at Campus School in Hisar and later pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. His time at IIT shaped his analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, which later became crucial in his political career.

Profession Before Coming into Politics

Before stepping into politics, Arvind Kejriwal was a civil servant. He joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1995 as an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax. During his tenure, he actively worked on transparency and anti-corruption measures within the government. In 2006, he resigned from the IRS to work full-time as a social activist. He founded the NGO Parivartan to address issues related to public grievances and corruption.

Life as a Politician

Arvind Kejriwal’s journey into politics began with his involvement in the India Against Corruption movement, led by social activist Anna Hazare. The movement demanded a strong Lokpal Bill to curb corruption in India. Kejriwal played a crucial role in mobilizing public support. However, differences in approach led him to form his own political party to directly challenge the system.

Party Name and Details

In 2012, Arvind Kejriwal founded the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a political organization based on transparency, good governance, and citizen participation. The party quickly gained popularity, particularly in Delhi, for its focus on anti-corruption, free electricity, water subsidies, and improved public services. AAP first contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections in 2013 and formed a minority government. Though the government was short-lived, Kejriwal returned with a landslide victory in 2015 and retained power in 2020 with a similar mandate.

Recent Activities

Arvind Kejriwal has been actively involved in expanding AAP’s presence beyond Delhi. The party won the Punjab Assembly elections in 2022, making Bhagwant Mann the Chief Minister. Kejriwal has also been vocal on national issues, including education reforms, healthcare improvements, and corruption-free governance.

Recently, he has been in the news for his stance against the central government’s policies, legal battles regarding governance in Delhi, and efforts to unite opposition parties against the ruling party at the national level. He continues to advocate for strong public welfare policies and better urban governance.

Conclusion

Arvind Kejriwal’s political journey reflects his transformation from an activist to a strong political leader. His focus on governance, transparency, and public welfare has reshaped politics in Delhi and other states where AAP is gaining traction. With an ambitious vision, Kejriwal remains a key player in India’s evolving political landscape.
