Mumbai Rains LIVE Updates: IMD Predicts Heavy Rain Till May 28, Red Alert Issued in Select Parts

Mumbai is currently grappling with an unprecedented early onset of the southwest monsoon, leading to record-breaking rainfall and significant disruptions across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas until May 28. This alert underscores the severity of the situation, urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Record-Breaking Rainfall

The monsoon’s early arrival has resulted in Mumbai experiencing its wettest May in over a century. The city recorded 295 mm of rainfall, surpassing the previous record of 279.4 mm set in May 1918. Notably, the IMD’s Colaba observatory reported 439 mm of rainfall, with major downpours causing severe waterlogging in several areas. This intense rain spell, while not classified as a cloudburst, has significantly impacted daily life in Mumbai.

Impact on Daily Life

The heavy rainfall has led to widespread waterlogging, disrupting transportation and daily activities. Key areas such as Dadar, Mahim, Parel, Bandra, and Kalachowki have been particularly affected. Local train services, a lifeline for Mumbai commuters, have been severely impacted, with delays and cancellations reported. Additionally, flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport have faced disruptions due to the adverse weather conditions.

Government and Administrative Response

In response to the escalating situation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated emergency protocols. Schools and colleges have been advised to remain closed, and citizens are urged to avoid non-essential travel. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in critical zones to assist with rescue and relief operations. Furthermore, the Maharashtra government has placed other districts like Kolhapur and Pune under red and orange alerts, respectively, indicating the widespread nature of the monsoon’s impact.

Weather Forecast and Advisories

The IMD forecasts that heavy rainfall will persist in Mumbai and its suburbs until May 28. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected in isolated areas. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow updates from official sources. The IMD’s red alert signifies the need for heightened preparedness and caution during this period.

Conclusion

Mumbai’s encounter with the early and intense monsoon serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather events. As the city navigates through this period of heavy rainfall, the collective efforts of authorities and citizens are crucial in mitigating risks and ensuring safety. Staying informed, adhering to advisories, and exercising caution can help Mumbai weather this storm effectively.
