Israeli PM Netanyahu Vows Strong Response After Gaza Rocket Attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged a robust military response following a series of rocket attacks launched from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel. This escalation has intensified tensions in the region, leading to significant casualties and international concern.

Escalation of Hostilities

On Sunday, Hamas militants fired approximately ten rockets toward Israeli cities, including Ashkelon. The Israeli military reported that most of these rockets were intercepted; however, a direct hit in Ashkelon resulted in at least one injury. In retaliation, Israeli forces targeted the launch sites within Gaza. Concurrently, Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip led to the deaths of at least 39 individuals, as reported by local health authorities.

Netanyahu’s Response

Prime Minister Netanyahu, who was en route to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the time, directed a vigorous military response to the rocket attacks. He emphasized Israel’s commitment to defending its citizens and maintaining national security. Netanyahu stated that Israel would not tolerate such aggression and would take all necessary measures to protect its populace.

Humanitarian Impact

The renewed conflict has had a devastating impact on civilians in Gaza. Israeli airstrikes have resulted in significant casualties, including women and children. Notably, strikes targeted areas such as Khan Younis and a bakery in Gaza City, leading to the deaths of numerous civilians. The ongoing blockade has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, cutting off essential supplies to Gaza’s 2.2 million residents.

International Reactions and Peace Efforts

The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence. The United Nations has condemned the attacks and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have been hindered by mutual distrust and the collapse of previous agreements. The U.S. administration has indicated its support for Israel’s right to self-defense while also urging restraint to prevent further civilian casualties.

Historical Context

This surge in violence marks a significant deterioration since the ceasefire initiated on January 19, 2025, which aimed to end a 15-month war that began following a large-scale Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023. That conflict resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the taking of 251 hostages. Since then, over 50,000 Palestinians have been reported killed in Israeli offensives.
