Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 3, 2025, for a two-day visit to participate in the sixth Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit. Upon his arrival at Don Mueang Airport, he was warmly received by Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, along with senior Thai officials. Members of the Indian diaspora gathered at the airport, greeting the Prime Minister with chants of “Modi, Modi” and enthusiastic performances, including traditional Bhangra dances by the Sikh community.
The BIMSTEC Summit, scheduled for April 4, 2025, in Bangkok, brings together leaders from member countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand—to discuss and enhance regional cooperation across various sectors. This year’s summit operates under the theme “Prosperous, Resilient, and Open BIMSTEC,” reflecting the collective vision for the region’s future.
On the sidelines of the summit, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar participated in the 20th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting, expressing India’s solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand in light of the recent earthquake. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts in addressing regional challenges and enhancing cooperation among member countries.
Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary also includes a visit to Sri Lanka following the BIMSTEC Summit. This visit aims to review progress on the ‘Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future’ vision, enhancing economic cooperation, and promoting regional stability. It marks his first trip to Sri Lanka since the election of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
