Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is a veteran Indian diplomat turned politician who has been serving as India’s Minister of External Affairs since May 2019. Known for his strategic insights, sharp intellect, and eloquent diplomacy, he is among the most influential figures in shaping modern India’s foreign policy. He is also the longest-serving External Affairs Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru.


Early Life and Education

Dr. Jaishankar was born on January 9, 1955, in New Delhi, India. He comes from a prestigious background—his father, K. Subrahmanyam, was one of India’s foremost strategic affairs analysts and a respected civil servant.

He completed his schooling at Air Force Central School in Delhi and earned his undergraduate degree from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. He later pursued a Master’s in Political Science and earned both an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), with a specialization in nuclear diplomacy.


Diplomatic Career

Dr. Jaishankar joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1977 and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the most respected diplomats in Indian history.

Some of his most notable diplomatic postings include:

  • Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2001–2004)
  • High Commissioner to Singapore (2007–2009)
  • Ambassador to China (2009–2013)
  • Ambassador to the United States (2014–2015)

During his tenure as a diplomat, he played a crucial role in the successful negotiation of the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, which marked a turning point in India-US relations.

He was appointed as India’s Foreign Secretary in 2015, a position he held until his retirement in 2018.


Entry into Politics

After his retirement, Dr. Jaishankar joined the private sector briefly before being appointed as India’s Minister of External Affairs in May 2019. He was later elected to the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) representing the state of Gujarat.

Since then, he has been at the forefront of India’s international engagement, representing the country on global platforms, managing crisis diplomacy, and fostering strategic partnerships across the world.

Dr. Jaishankar is also a noted author and public intellectual. His books reflect his deep understanding of global politics and India’s evolving place in the world.

Dr. Jaishankar is married to Kyoko Jaishankar, and the couple has two sons and a daughter. He is a linguist and is fluent in several languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Russian, and conversational Japanese.
