Shinde Sets June 7 Deadline for Drain Cleaning in Mumbai Region: A Comprehensive Overview
As the monsoon season approaches, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has issued a directive to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to complete all ongoing drain cleaning work in Mumbai and its suburbs by June 7, 2025. This move aims to mitigate flooding risks and ensure public safety during the heavy rains.
Background and Rationale
Mumbai, being a coastal city, is prone to waterlogging and flooding during the monsoon season. Clogged drains and nullahs exacerbate these issues, leading to traffic disruptions, property damage, and health hazards. Recognizing the urgency, Deputy CM Shinde emphasized the importance of timely desilting and cleaning of the drainage systems.
Inspection and Directives
On May 23, 2025, Shinde conducted inspections at various locations, including Usha Nagar in Bhandup, Nehru Nagar Nalla in Wadala, and near the T Junction in Dharavi. During these visits, he assessed the progress of drain cleaning operations and interacted with BMC officials. He mandated that all silt removed from drains must be transported to designated dumping grounds within 48 hours to prevent re-clogging. Furthermore, he warned that strict action would be taken against officials who delay or neglect this crucial work.
Progress and Technological Advancements
As of the inspection date, BMC officials reported that over 85% of major drains and 65% of minor drains had been cleaned. To enhance efficiency, the BMC has deployed Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and robots for the first time in its drain cleaning operations. These technologies are particularly useful for accessing difficult culverts, especially beneath railway tracks, and for monitoring the desilting process from silt extraction to transportation and disposal.
Preventive Measures and Infrastructure Enhancements
In anticipation of the monsoon, the BMC has identified flood-prone areas and installed 422 water pumps to drain out water. Additionally, two holding ponds and 10 mini pumping stations have been made operational to prevent waterlogging. Shinde also visited Surya Nagar in Vikhroli, a landslide-prone zone, where he directed the installation of protective nets and the relocation of families living in high-risk areas.
Public Response and Accountability
The directive has been met with public approval, as citizens hope for a reduction in the annual monsoon-related disruptions. However, there is also a call for transparency and accountability in the execution of these tasks. Shinde’s warning of strict action against negligent officials underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring timely completion of the drain cleaning operations.
