Manoj Kumar’s Sons Immerse His Ashes in Ganga at Haridwar – A Final Tribute

Introduction
On April 4, 2025, India bid farewell to one of its most iconic cinematic figures, Manoj Kumar, affectionately known as “Bharat Kumar” for his patriotic roles in films like Upkar and Kranti. The veteran actor passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai after a prolonged illness . A week later, his sons, Kunal and Vishal Goswami, performed the sacred ritual of immersing his ashes in the Ganga River at Haridwar, marking the culmination of his final rites.​

The Immersion Ceremony at Haridwar
The immersion ceremony took place at the revered Har Ki Pauri ghat in Haridwar, a site of immense spiritual significance in Hinduism. Kunal and Vishal Goswami, accompanied by close family members, conducted the ritual under the guidance of the family’s priest. Kunal Goswami expressed, “The ashes have been immersed in the Ganges, and we pray for the peace of his soul through the blessings of Mother Ganga” .​

A Nation’s Farewell
Prior to the immersion, Manoj Kumar was cremated with full state honors at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai. The ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries and celebrities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan, and Subhash Ghai, who paid their last respects to the legendary actor . Kunal Goswami lit the funeral pyre, fulfilling his duties as the elder son .​

Manoj Kumar’s contributions to Indian cinema were profound. His films often centered around themes of patriotism and social justice, resonating deeply with audiences across the nation. His portrayal of selfless protagonists earned him the moniker “Bharat Kumar,” symbolizing the spirit of India.

The Significance of Ganga Immersion

In Hindu tradition, immersing the ashes of the deceased in the Ganga River is believed to purify the soul and aid in its journey towards moksha, or liberation. Haridwar, being one of the holiest cities in India, is a preferred site for such rituals, offering a serene environment for families to perform the last rites of their loved ones.​
