On May 26, 2025, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least 52 individuals, including 36 people who were sheltering in a school in Gaza City’s Daraj neighborhood. The Israeli military stated that the school was being used as a command center by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Another strike in northern Gaza killed 16 members of the same family.

The conflict, reignited in March after a broken ceasefire, has led to widespread destruction and displacement. Israel’s offensive aims to dismantle Hamas and recover remaining hostages from the October 2023 attack. The prolonged conflict has killed around 54,000 Palestinians and displaced 90% of Gaza’s population, with many sheltering in schools and tents amid dire humanitarian conditions.

In response to the humanitarian crisis, Israel introduced a controversial U.S.-backed aid distribution system via the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, intended to reach one million people. However, U.N. agencies and major humanitarian organizations have rejected involvement, citing concerns about displacement and violations of humanitarian principles. The system suffered a setback when its American leader resigned, claiming a lack of operational independence.

The international community continues to express concern over the escalating violence and humanitarian situation in Gaza. Efforts are ongoing to address the crisis and provide relief to the affected population.
