OpenAI Unveils Next-Gen AI Agent After Operator | Sam Altman Calls It a Superpower

After launching Operator last week, OpenAI unveils its next AI agent —Deep Research. The agent is designed to perform detailed research using its chatbot, ChatGPT. Powered by OpenAI o3 optimised for web browsing and python analysis, deep research uses reasoning to intelligently and extensively browse text, images, and PDFs across the internet, explains OpenAI.

In the blog post, it states, “Deep research is built for people who do intensive knowledge work in areas like finance, science, policy & engineering and need thorough & reliable research.”

“It’s also useful for discerning shoppers looking for hyper-personalised recos on purchases that require careful research,” it adds.

OpenAI VP Engineer Srinivas Narayanan explains that this new model is a “new way of using AI to help us on complex knowledge tasks.” He adds that the Deep Research is like asking for an expert’s advice. It aims to minimise tasks and save up hours of research if done by a human.

OpenAI’s Deep Research: How to use

In ChatGPT, simply select “Deep Research” from the message composer and enter your query. Whether you need a competitive analysis of streaming platforms or a personalised report on the best commuter bike, just let ChatGPT know what you’re after. You can even attach files or spreadsheets for added context. Once you submit your request, a sidebar will appear to show the steps being taken and the sources used during the process.

OpenAI confirms that this AI agent can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the enquiry. The user will receive a notification once the research is complete, and until then they are free to do other tasks. The final result will be delivered as a detailed report within the chat.

According to the company, while Deep Research excels at providing comprehensive, well-documented answers with verified sources, GPT-4 is better suited for real-time, multimodal conversations. For complex, domain-specific enquiries that require depth and precision, deep research offers the advantage of extensive exploration and citation—perfect for producing reliable, actionable insights.

Explaining how this agent works, CEO Sam Altman posted an example on X (formerly Twitter). He posted that while this model is slow, it is the first AI model that can “do such a wide variety of complex, valuable tasks.”

Next, OpenAI is also planning to add embedded images, data visualisations, and other analytic features to enhance the clarity and context of the reports soon.

How is it different from the Operator?

The key differentiation is that while the Operator can be tasked with a wide range of repetitive browser activities, such as completing forms, ordering groceries, or even creating memes, it cannot perform in-depth research like the new AI agent.

Deep research builds on the reasoning capabilities to bridge the gap, allowing it to take on the types of problems people face in work and everyday life.

However, both the agents are a significant step toward the broader goal of developing AGI, which OpenAI has been pointing out for a long period.

This also comes at a time when a Chinese AI model, DeepSeek gained a lot of attention for its advanced tech and cheap cost. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also praised DeepSeek, but promised a much better models.
