Pawan Khera Criticizes PM Modi’s Silence on Trump’s Ceasefire Claims

In May 2025, Congress leader Pawan Khera publicly questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Trump claimed that through trade negotiations, he influenced the cessation of hostilities following India’s Operation Sindoor, a military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Khera highlighted that this was the eighth instance of Trump making such a claim, raising concerns about the implications for India’s foreign policy and sovereignty.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded by reiterating India’s longstanding position that issues pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir are to be addressed bilaterally between India and Pakistan, without third-party mediation. The MEA also clarified that trade discussions did not occur between Indian and U.S. leaders during the period of Operation Sindoor and the subsequent ceasefire.

Despite the MEA’s statement, the Congress party continued to demand a direct response from Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in matters of national security and foreign diplomacy. The situation has sparked a broader political debate in India, with opposition leaders urging the government to clarify its stance and actions during the conflict.
